Selling DECA to New Members

Aug 1, 2024

Membership recruitment at the beginning of each school year is essential to a chapter’s success. Here are some ideas to help you sell DECA while gaining exposure from your school community.

Recruitment Opportunities

1. Club Fair

Almost every school has some form of a club fair. The best part about these events is that the marketing is done for you! Freshmen and sophomores are searching for opportunities, and you need to capitalize. Be loud! Make sure everyone comes over to your table. You can put candy out to attract more people and give it to them if they sign up for more information.

2. Sports Games

Athletics are a core part of a school’s community. Linking them with DECA can entice a large crowd. Set up and sell concessions at a game, hold a small raffle or give out water bottles on behalf of the chapter. This will strengthen your community image with students and parents.

3. Announcements and Social Media

Media attention is a great way to get DECA in people’s minds. Create an engaging social media account that shows all your events and accomplishments. Post any DECA news or activities on your school’s announcements to let everyone know what your chapter is doing.

What do I say to potential members?

Come for the Competition

DECA has 60 competitive events in five different career clusters and three formats. This gives students the opportunity to explore interests and learn more by applying their school knowledge. Competition is no joke, with over 14,000 competitors at ICDC and more at district and association levels.

Stay for the Conferences

While we focus on competition, it’s important to note that WE HAVE FUN! Conferences are a great way to attract members as a new experience where you can travel and meet people. With over 23,000 attendees at ICDC, who doesn’t want to be a part of that?!

Learn Skills for Everything

DECA offers business education, leadership experience and personal growth. No matter what you do, these skills are necessary for success, and DECA can help you achieve your goals.
