Case Study of the Week: An Ethical Partnership?

Dec 25, 2023

Business Ethics

You are to assume the role of the director of partnerships at Body Positivity Society, a nonprofit organization that educates and promotes body positivity. The executive director wants you to analyze whether to accept a generous bid for partnership from a national apparel chain.

Body Positivity Society recently developed a new program that will facilitate body acceptance programs in high schools and colleges. The body acceptance program will focus on mental well-being and confidence. The national apparel chain, Wonders, wants to donate significant funds to the program to be a partner in the endeavor.

Wonders is an apparel chain that targets young adults. The chain features casual apparel and accessories for both males and females. The chain has been under scrutiny for several years. First, the chain has been criticized for only offering female apparel in sizes ranging from size 2 to size 14. This sizing scale does not allow for zero sizes or plus sizes. Employees working at Wonders store locations must wear Wonders branded clothing, meaning that all female employees must be size 2-14 or wear the men’s apparel which comes in larger sizes.

In addition, Wonders has made headlines with its dismal company culture. Employees have spoken out about unachievable sales goals, pressure to persuade customers to secure Wonders credit and scoldings from district managers that sound like an angry parent rather than a solid leader.

Now Wonders wants to donate significant funds to be a partner in Body Positivity Society's body acceptance program.

The executive director wants you to analyze whether to accept the needed funding from Wonders for the program. The executive director wants the analysis to include:

  • Benefits vs. risks of partnership with Wonders
  • Long-term value and impact of decision on Wonders and on Body Positivity Society
  • How organizational culture affects program focus on mental well-being and confidence
  • Final recommendation
