Sep 1, 2024

One of the biggest decisions in your DECA journey is selecting your competitive event for the year. Here are some strategies for tackling that big task.

Pick a Career Cluster

All of DECA’s events are categorized into 5 Career Clusters. Look at which one interests you or where your future career may be. If you like social media and creating content, check out Marketing. Is food and traveling more your vibe? Look at Hospitality and Tourism. Do you like math and analyzing situations? Go for Finance. If you’re always solving problems and voicing your opinions, look at Management. Are you innovative and filled with passion? Then Entrepreneurship might Be The One for you.

Explore Formats

DECA’s events are designed in three different formats. Role-plays involve on-the-spot creativity and speaking to address Indicators with little time to prepare. Prepared Events consist of months of preparation with a commitment to heavy writing and designing. Virtual options put you in simulated situations to manage and operate. Pinpoint your strengths or try to develop them when picking a format.

Start with Principles

Principles of Business Administration events are made for only first-year members and get you a great start in DECA. It allows new members to learn and pick their path. Principles offer a soft start to explore what you like. It can help decide which Cluster you select for future years or whether a Roleplay event is for you.

You Can’t Go Wrong

No matter what event you choose, there is ample opportunity for you to succeed. Any event gives you the experience to learn more and compete alongside other passionate leaders. It’s up to you to put in hard work, to solve the next problem, to Be The One. And every member has the potential to do so.
