How to Stand Out During College Application Season

Sep 1, 2024

As the school season begins, many senior DECA members prepare to start the college application. But what does it take to stand out among your peers and get into your dream school? Here are some of my tried-and-true tips to help you better navigate applying to college.

Write and Critique your Essays

Your essays and personal statements are one of the most important parts of your application. Writing several essays allows you to develop the best piece with the strongest character. Your essay is also one of the best ways to showcase your personality and passions! Write about a topic that represents you; once written, ask for critiques. You can reach out to teachers and peers for additional tips to strengthen your essay, ultimately allowing you to submit the best piece possible.

Showcase Your Involvements

Admission officers are looking for applicants who are passionate and involved within their schools and communities. When sharing your involvement in programs, clubs or other experiences, go into depth and highlight any leadership positions, awards or skills gained. Your admission officers are looking for passionate and engaged students, allowing you to showcase what makes you a strong candidate.

Be Authentic

Lastly, be authentic. Students often don’t have the opportunity to meet admissions counselors in person, so your application is your only opportunity to show what makes you you! Showcase what you’re passionate about and remain genuine. Your admissions officers want to see who you are and learn about you through your application.

On behalf of the Executive Officer Team, we wish you all the best of luck in your college applications and are excited to watch you all Be The One with DECA.
