Your DECA Playbook: How to Build a Winning DECA Resume

Jan 1, 2025

With the new year underway, it’s time to step up your DECA game. While competitions and leadership roles are common resume-builders, there are other lesser-known ways to boost your DECA experience. Whether you want to develop leadership skills, gain real-world experience or enhance your brand, these opportunities can help you build a winning game plan.

Lead a Project or Event

Taking the lead on a project or event is a fantastic way to highlight your leadership and event-planning skills. Consider organizing a community fundraiser, hosting a business workshop or starting a new tradition, like a networking event. DECA’s Chapter Campaigns offer valuable opportunities as well. While some deadlines have passed, there's still time to join the Advocacy Campaign and promote DECA in your school or community.

Write a DECA Direct Online Article

Did you know you can submit your own article to DECA Direct Online? Share your chapter projects, events you've organized, workshops you've led or attended or tips and success stories from your competition prep. The possibilities are endless, so get creative and boost your visibility on a national stage!

Manage Your School-Based Enterprise (SBE)

If your chapter runs a School-Based Enterprise, take the initiative and become a manager. You can also collaborate to earn SBE certification and gain national recognition. This experience highlights your leadership, critical thinking and responsibility, helping you build business knowledge and stand out to colleges and employers.

Apply for DECA Scholarships

Most members don’t realize how easy it is to apply for DECA scholarships. Log in to your membership portal, and your profile will automatically match you with opportunities. Scholarships recognize leadership, DECA involvement and academic achievements, so be sure to apply before January 10th.

Emerging Leader Honor Award

Are you a graduating senior this year? Aim for DECA’s prestigious Emerging Leader Honor Award, which recognizes seniors who excel in academics, leadership and DECA involvement. Work with your chapter advisor to apply and finish your DECA journey strong.

Go beyond the usual, try new things and make your DECA experience a winning game plan. Each opportunity brings you closer to success—what are you going to tackle next?
